Tim de Christopher,
Sufficeth Installation, 2012, mixed media, 48 x 108 x 108"

Following in the footsteps of The Fruit of Our Labors, created in 2010, Sufficeth is another installation presenting to viewers a complex narrative image of humanity’s “travels through life”.

Fish of all sizes, carved from stone, will hang from the beams and rafters of a simple yet substantial architectural surround.  This sets a stage, the structure a metaphor for man’s intellect and industry, and in a larger sense a symbol of God’s creation.

The fish are meant as a metaphor for mankind, individually and collectively. Though each displays a distinct persona still they hang collectively, as if specimens on display or the day’s catch.

They are crafted of limestone, a material born from the sea, from bones and shells long since transfigured, petrified.

They are framed within the structure, within the experience of man, their meaning open to conjecture.

My intention is that the work evoke a mystery begging exploration; that there be questions without direct answers, that our sense of wonder should be awakened.
