John Roy received both his BFA and MFA from Yale University, where he studied under Josef Albers. From 1964 - 1994 he was a professor in the Art Department of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He was a close friend of Chuck Close, Hanlyn Davies, and John Townsend, all of whom he named as influences. He continued to paint until his death in 2001.

John Roy's work has been included in numerous prestigious public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield.
