Larry Preston paints still lifes, landscapes and portraits that can seem at once accurate and surreal, historical and contemporary. Preston's most recent paintings have grown to be his most classical because of his choice of subject matter and his technique. Yet, even in Preston's most convincingly "realistic" paintings proportions are altered, perspectives change and vantage points shift, lending a sense of life and animation to the featured objects. Preston paints in oil on a gesso-prepared panel. Using delicate brush work and layers of glazed color he achieves a polished surface. That quality is accentuated by his selection of objects. The shine on the surface of glass or fruit and the shadows and texture of the tablecloth are amplified by a highly evolved technique. |
